Weekly Review: Sick Week

Unfortunately, my younger two boys and husband came down with the flu this week.  It feels like each day another family member falls victim.  Christopher has developed the sniffles and a cough.  I fear he may be next.

School was scaled back this week Christopher and I focused mostly on the basics.

English: We completed unit two and will begin unit 3 next week.

Math: Completed two math lessons.

Phonics: Completed three lessons.

History:  Watched a video about Thomas Jefferson and learned about Alfred the Great. Our study of Alfred the Great included lots of information on the Vikings.  We have the decided that the Vikings were a nuisance traveling around raiding and disturbing the peace!  Christopher believes the Vikings and his little brother Joshua have a lot in common. Next week we will go more in depth with Thomas Jefferson and review Christopher Columbus.

FIAR: We read Night of the MoonJellies.  This book is about a boy Mark who spent a summer with his grandmother helping at her hot dog stand.  On his way to the restaurant one day he picks up a moon jelly (jellyfish).

My original plan for this book was for us to visit the aquarium and compare fresh water vs. salt water biomes.  One of our homeschool groups scheduled a field trip and I thought this would be a perfect tie in. But since several of us came down with the flu we had to sit this field trip out.  Big time BUMMMER!

Instead I decided that we would pull out the pastel chalks and create art work. I purchased an art e-book from a fellow homeschooler. We have some pastel chalks just sitting around and I figured this would be a great way to put them to use.

I just love the boys creations.  Emmanuel’s work bottom right if you look closely his boat has come ashore.  And I love the detail Christopher added to his beach, people swimming in the water, sand castles beach umbrella.  Then Joshua top left  made use of all the colors and my contribution is on the bottom left.

Thank you Hodgepodge for offering a fun way for us to incorporate art into our everyday learning.

Tiffany,

I'm sorry to hear that the flu has taken over. It is always a bit tricky for me to decide what to do when one or more are sick. I had one who was sick, one kind of sick and another who was running through the house. They all were well enough to do something, but not our regular scheduled schoolwork. It's good you worked w/Christopher. We just took the day off.

I have some Hodgepodge art projects lined up too for my children. The boys' work is very nice.

This was a particular virulent strain of the flu that my family is getting out from under. Looking back, it seems like hydration and fever management were the key to getting through it.

Praying you all get through it quickly.

Yes Ahermitt, same with us fever reducer and hydration seems to be the key. My middle son who got it first is still battaling but my youngest and hubby seem to be on the tail end.
